REIGN (2013 fall)

Upfronts 2013: First Look At The CW’s ‘Reign’

Created by Stephanie Sengupta & Laurie McCarthy and produced by CBS Television Studios, Reign is one of a number of new drama series ordered by The CW for the 2013-2014 season. The series stars tells the previously unknown and untold story of Mary Queen of Scots’ rise to power when she arrives in France as a 15-year-old, betrothed to Prince Francis, and with her three best friends as ladies-in-waiting.  Want to know more about Reign? TVWise presents a first look at the new series.

Hidden between the lines of the history books is the story of Mary Stuart, the young woman the world would come to know as Mary, Queen of Scots. Queen of Scotland since she was six days old, the teenage Mary is already a headstrong monarch; beautiful, passionate, and poised at the very beginning of her tumultuous rise to power. Arriving in France with four close friends as her ladies-in-waiting, Mary has been sent to secure Scotland’s strategic alliance by formalizing her arranged engagement to the French king’s dashing son, Prince Francis. But the match isn’t signed and sealed, it depends more on politics, religion and secret agendas than affairs of the heart. Prince Francis is intrigued by the fiery Scot, but like most young men, he resists the idea of settling down into marriage, especially when he has a history with a lady of the court and his own point of view on the wisdom of an alliance with Scotland. Still, an attraction between Mary and Francis is ignited. Further complicating things is Bash, Francis’ roguish half-brother, who has a history of his own: despite his illegitimate birth, Bash is his father’s favorite. And now that Bash has caught Mary’s eye, a royal triangle may be forming. While at French Court, fierce foes and dark forces conspire to sabotage Mary’s marriage to Francis and even threaten her life, until a mysterious shrouded guide becomes her ally. With danger and sexual intrigue around every dark castle corner, Mary rallies her ladies-in-waiting and steels herself, ready to rule the new land and balance the demands of her country and her heart.

MICHAEL FASSBENDER IS MACBETH

Now, here is a super delicious info from the epic genre front: our dearly beloved Michael Fassbender will play the scheming king in the new movie adaptation of famous William Shakespeare’s play MACBETH! Coming from the producers of SHAME and KING’S SPEECH and to be helmed by Justin Kurzel, the film will bring the new take on Shakespeare’s classic – about a ruthlessly ambitious Scottish lord who seizes the throne with the help of his scheming wife and three witches! BBC One has renewed its drama series The Village for a second season of six episodes, slated to air in 2014. The renewal comes after the series proved to be a hit for the BBC, over the course of its six episode first season the series has been averaging a consolidated audience of 7.1 million viewers in its Sunday night 9pm time-slot

Created by Peter Moffat, The Village tells the story of one village over the period of 100 years, told through the memories of Bert Middleton who has been a resident in the village for the full century that the series will cover. The drama will open in 1914, when a young Bert is being raised on his family’s farm in Derbyshire. The Village stars Maxine Peake, John Simm, Bill Jones, Nico Mirallegro, Emily Beecham, Charlie Murphy, Jim Cartwright, Anthony Flanagan, Annabelle Apsion, Joe Armstrong, Matt Stokoe, Augustus Prew and Stephen Walters. Company Pictures is producing with John Griffin, George Faber, Charles Pattinson and Polly Hill serving as executive producers. The show’s second season will chronicle the story of the village thorugh the 1920s.

Speaking of the renewal, Peter Moffat said: “I’m thrilled at the prospect of bringing to the screen the plans I’ve got for all these characters (and some new ones) as the life of the village moves away from the horror of war and into the roaring Twenties. Boom and bust, the Charleston and the Black Bottom, motor cars, extreme politics, fish and chips, jazz, bananas, cinema, the decline of the aristocracy and the rise of the middle classes – the outside world comes to the village, bringing with it the big drama that change always generates. I’m very grateful for the support the BBC have given this project right from the start. No other broadcaster I can think of would have the confidence to do it.”

Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One, commented: “The Village is drama of the highest quality. Brilliantly written, beautifully produced, and performed with huge talent and imagination. I’m really proud to have it on the BBC and delighted it is coming back for a second series.”

Executive Producer John Griffin said:  “We are delighted with the success of The Village and the response we have had to such a beautiful authored piece from Peter Moffat.  The cast have been extraordinary in what is very much an ensemble piece and we look forward to working with them again on series two. We have worked closely with the BBC to make this an event piece of television that belongs firmly in the BBC schedules, and look forward to continuing the story into the 1920s in a second series.”

While John Yorke, Managing Director of Company Pictures, added: “It’s been a real thrill to watch an audience fall in love with Peter Moffat’s extraordinary world and take the tough, hard lives of the villagers to their hearts. It’s the first chapter in a story that we hope will span a century, and we’re delighted  that the BBC have shown such faith and commitment to Peter’s vision.”
