Episode 1: ‘World without God’

Wednesday 11 November 2015, 10pm

London 1827: River Thames at night – a smuggling operation is underway – suddenly, a river police launch is bearing down on the smugglers and a fight breaks out, followed by a furious chase to the shore.

John Marlott, a senior river police officer and veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, paces the shoreline of the Thames reviewing the aftermath.  A sharp police whistle draws his attention towards a small shape lying at the waters edge.  As he approaches he sees it is the body of a child, a young girl around 10 years of age.

Her body is covered in crude sutures, and is a horrifying sight.  He reaches down to touch the dead hand – but in a moment of terror, the hand grabs him back!

The dreadful corpse is brought to the urgent attention of the Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel, who summons Marlott, and tells him that he wants him to undertake a private investigation. The leading surgeon at St Bart’s hospital in Smithfield, Sir William Chester, tells Marlott that the corpse was made up of seven or eight bodies stitched together.

Marlott is put to work within the offices of the Bow Street Runners, and recruits an optimistic young runner, Nightingale, to assist him. Marlott’s attention is then drawn towards a slum dwelling where criminal Billy Oates masterminds his gang of child criminals.  There he discovers a young girl Flora.

He also finds a painting on the wall.  It is “Little Girl Lost” by the artist William Blake – Marlott resolves to investigate further.

Episode 2: ‘Seeing Things’

Wednesday 18 November 2015, 10pm

Marlott visits the house of artist and printmaker William Blake who is on his deathbed, but he receives Marlott as a prophet of things to come.

Marlott confers with Nightingale who has been keeping watch on a public house, The Fortune of War, which is situated opposite St Barts hospital in Smithfield.  This is where the body snatchers gather, along with their “goods” which they sell at the hospital.  Marlott identifies one body snatcher, Pritty, as potentially helpful, and he and Nightingale set up a cunning ‘sting’ which brings him into their service.

Pritty is most indignant; body snatching is not illegal.  He considers himself to be a businessman and hotly denies anything to do with the sutured child – though he does know of a gang who might not shrink at darker acts.  Marlott charges him to arrange a meeting with them.

Marlott is visited by a Lady Hervey, a beautiful and fervent aristocrat – and a devoted Christian.  She passionately opposes the Anatomy Act because she believes it will lead to a world without God.  She begs Marlott to do whatever he can to stop the act being passed.

Marlott attends an anatomy lecture at St Barts, given by Garnet Chester the flamboyant cousin of Sir William, who performs a galvanizing experiment on a young corpse.  As the dead arm twitches to a sensational response from the students, the lecture is disrupted by anti Anatomy Act supporters.

Marlott follows them to a public debate being conducted by a powerful MP, Bentley Warburton, who attempts to rouse the poor about the horrors of public dissection and urges them to demonstrate about the coming Anatomy Act.

A curious eye meets Marlott’s – young journalist Boz is writing a story about the coming act and Marlott quizzes him. Boz sets his sights on unraveling the secrets behind Marlott’s quest.

ITV Encore Greenlights ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’, Sean Bean To Star

Sean Bean is to face Frankenstein’s monster in a new ITV adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic.

The Game of Thrones star will play Inspector John Marlott, a new character in what is being described as a “re-imagining of the Frankenstein myth”.

Set in 1827, the six-part drama follows the inspector as he investigates a mutilated body washed up on the Thames.

It will be the first original drama for ITV’s subscription channel ITV Encore since it launched earlier this year.

Shooting starts in Northern Ireland in January.

According to ITV and producers Rainmark Films, the drama opens with Bean’s character being recruited by Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel to apprehend a gang of opium smugglers.

But, as he waits to make an arrest, the inspector discovers the body of a dead child. On further examination of the corpse he is horrified to discover it’s not actually a child but rather a crude assembly of body parts arranged in a grotesque parody of a human form.

Over the course of six, hour-long episodes Marlott attempts to track down the killer.

“Marlott’s investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London,” said the series’ co-creator and director Benjamin Ross (Poppy Shakespeare, RKO281).

“He discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching, and murder for profit. The rational evidence points first one-way and then another as he contemplates a frightening alternate scenario,” added Benjamin.

ITV has yet to confirm a transmission date for the series, but it is due in the same year as a new big screen adaptation of the horror story.

Victor Frankenstein will star James McAvoy as the eponymous doctor and Daniel Radcliffe as Igor, his hunchbacked lab assistant.

The Last Kingdom

BBC Two to adapt ‘Sharpe’ writer’s ‘The Last Kingdom’

Sharpe Sean Bean

BBC Two has announced a new adaptation of Sharpe creator Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling series of books, The Saxon Stories.

Adapted by Stephen Butchard (Good Cop, House Of Saddam), the eight-part historical drama series is described by the BBC as “a show full of heroic deeds and epic battles but with a thematic depth that embraces politics, religion, warfare, courage, love, loyalty and our universal search for identity”.

The Last Kingdom is a co-production with BBC America and Downton Abbey makers Carnival Films.

The official synopsis reads: “Set in the year 872, when many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Vikings, the great kingdom of Wessex has been left standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred the Great.

“Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is orphaned by the Vikings and then kidnapped and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he – Saxon or Viking? On a quest to claim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, seek to recapture his ancestral lands.”

The Last Kingdom begins filming this autumn.

Executive producer Gareth Neame commented: “Cornwell’s Saxon novels combine historical figures and events with fiction in an utterly compelling way.”

He added: “In the hands of Stephen Butchard we believe it will make original and engrossing television drama. In part the epic quest of our hero Uhtred, it is also a fascinating re-telling of the tale of King Alfred the Great and how he united the many separate kingdoms on this island into what would become England.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said: “I hope The Last Kingdom will expand BBC Two’s distinctive portfolio of drama. It’s an epic narrative with an extraordinary creative team. It will feel like nothing else on television, with all of the scale and intrigue of the best fantasy stories but the reality of fact.”

Martin Clunes to play Sherlock Holmes creator in ITV drama

ITV has commissionsed a new adaptation of Julian Barnes’s novel, Arthur & George, based on an intriguing series of genuine events in the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Set in 1903, the three part drama will star Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) as the novelist and physician who created the detective Sherlock Holmes.

The official synopsis reads: “Conan Doyle recaptures his zest for life by pursuing and challenging a notorious miscarriage of justice.   It is the case of George Edalji, a hard-working solicitor and the son of Hampshire vicar, Reverend Shapurji Edalji and his wife Charlotte.  George has served seven years in Pentonville Prison for allegedly mutilating animals and sending threatening letters, a series of offences which have become known as The Great Wyrley Rippings.

“Following the death of his wife, Louisa, Conan Doyle has become a “bore and a sulk” by his own admission.  All around him do their best to bolster Arthur from his grief and mourning including his beloved ‘Mam’ who implores him to “sink his teeth into something.  If not a book then some new pursuit.””

Arthur & George also follows Conan Doyle’s relationship with Jean Leckie, a much younger woman, with whom he enjoyed a ‘platonic’ relationship whilst his wife was alive.  Jean eventually became his second wife.

ITV’s Director of Drama, Steve November commented: “Arthur & George explores what we think we know about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s life.  It’s a fascinating insight into the man who was to become one of the most famous of his age. We’re delighted to be working with Martin and the production team at Buffalo Pictures on such a clever and complex adaptation of Julian Barnes’s acclaimed novel.”

Written by Ed Whitmore (Silent Witness, Waking The Dead), Arthur & George begins filming in Greater London and Staffordshire this autumn.
