Gentleman Jack renewed for 2nd season.

Will there be a second season of ‘Gentleman Jack’?

Here’s some wonderful and unexpectedly early news for Gentleman Jack fans!

Following its hugely successful debut in the UK last month, the BBC has already confirmed that the period drama series has been renewed for a second season.

Set in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1832, Gentleman Jack is based on the diaries of remarkable Regency landowner Anne Lister, played by Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones.

Episode 1 was the most successful launch for a new BBC drama this year, winning its slot with a peak of 5.6 million.

Gentleman Jack will return next year with another eight episodes.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, commented: “Gentleman Jack exudes sass and originality, and has been a huge hit with our BBC One audience. We look forward to continuing Anne Lister’s journey with Sally, Suranne and the rest of the team.”

Executive producer Faith Penhale added: “I’m thrilled that viewers have embraced Anne Lister with the passion and positivity that she deserves. Sally and Suranne’s achievement in bringing this remarkable and inspirational figure back to life has been quite incredible and we can’t wait to create the next chapter in Anne’s story.”

Alongside Suranne Jones, the cast also includes Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as Ann Walker, Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) as Anne Lister’s sister Marian, Timothy West (Last Tango In Halifax) as their father Jeremy Lister, and Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Diary) as Aunt Anne Lister, with Stephanie Cole (Still Open All Hours), Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Amelia Bullmore (Scott & Bailey), Vincent Franklin (Happy Valley), Shaun Dooley (Broadchurch), Joe Armstrong (Happy Valley).

The Children – BBC

A new TV movie set in 1945 has begun filming in Northern Ireland.

Marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust next year, The Children is described as a “stark, moving and ultimately redemptive story.”

Written by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Simon Block (The Eichmann Show), the one-off 90-minute special is based on the first-person testimony of some of these now elderly survivors of the Holocaust, whose filmed interviews will also be featured in the film.

The Children will star Romola Garai (The Hour), Tim McInnerny (Blackadder) and Iain Glen (Downton Abbey).

The official synopsis reads: “One summer’s night in 1945 a coach-load of children, some as young as three years old, are in transit from Carlisle airport to the Calgarth Estate in Lake Windermere, England. They are child survivors, and presumed orphans, of the Holocaust.

“With only a few meager possessions, they do not know what awaits them in Britain. They speak no English and, having spent many years living in death camps, and are deeply traumatized.

“At the end of World War II, the British government granted up to 1,000 children the right to come to the UK. Three hundred of these children were brought to Lake Windermere for their first four months to have the opportunity to recover, surrounded by nature.

“The responsibility for looking after the children is held by Oscar Friedmann (Thomas Kretschmann – The Pianist), a German-born child social worker and psychoanalyst. He and his team are in uncharted territory: their project to mass-rehabilitate a group of children has never been attempted before.”

BBC Two controller Patrick Holland commented: “The Children promises to be a beautiful and powerful drama about a little-known part of British history. The refuge given in the Lakes and determination to give children back their lives so they could begin again is both deeply moving and humbling.”

Executive producer Leanne Klein added: “The Children is a story of hope after horror, revealing how Britain and a remarkable group of adults transformed the lives of 300 child survivors of the concentration camps.

“Seventy-five years after the Holocaust ended it’s a story that feels as important and relevant as ever. I’m incredibly proud of the exceptional cast and crew we have brought together to make this film.”

The Children will air on in the UK on BBC Two and in Germany on ZDF in 2020.

BBC’S DRACULA MINI SERIES

CLAES BANG TO LEAD

BBC’S DRACULA MINI SERIES

Consisting of three 90-minute episodes, the upcoming Dracula series will re-introduce the world to the vampire who “made evil sexy.” Taking place in Translyvania in 1897, the series will find “the blood drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.” In a statement, Claes Bang said:

I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock. I’m so excited that I get to dig in to this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realise that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character.

There have been quite a number of adaptations of Dracula since the release of the Bram Stoker novel more than a hundred years ago, but I’m willing to give Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss a chance to prove that they can do something new with the story. “It was one of those moments – who else could it be than Claes. He has it all. Brilliant, gorgeous, charismatic, lethal. Tall, dark and gruesome all at once.” said Moffat, Gatiss, and executive producer Sue Vertue. Director of BBC Content and Piers Wenger added, “Hell has a new boss… and BBC One has an outstanding new leading man. To say we have lucked out with Claes would be to underestimate the supreme talents of Steven, Mark and the team at Hartswood and their knack for choosing the right actor to redefine an iconic role. Seriously exciting stuff.” Production on the Dracula series is expected to begin next year. As I’m not overly familiar with Claes Bang, I’ll leave it up to those of you who are, does he have the right stuff to play Dracula?

The ABC Murders

An Agatha Christie 1936 Novel    (rumored to release Dec 25th)

The ABC Murders   c. 1933

BBC One and Amazon have released the first photo of John Malkovich as Inspector Hercule Poirot in “The ABC Murders,” the upcoming three-part mini-series which Alex Gabassi (“The Frankenstein Chronicles”) is directing.

The series has once again been adapted by Mammoth Screen and writer Sarah Phelps following their limited series adaptations of “And Then There Were None,” “The Witness for the Prosecution” and “Ordeal by Innocence”.

Set in 1933, a serial killer is terrorising Britain – striking in a methodical pattern of killing people whose names and suburbs all begin with the same letter of the alphabet (eg. Alice Ascher of Andover, Betty Barnard of Bexhill) and leaving a copy of the ABC railway guide at the scene of each.

Poirot attempts to investigate but is thwarted on every front and if he is to match his most cunning nemesis, everything about him will be called into question: his authority, his integrity, his identity. Rupert Grint, Tara Fitzgerald, Andrew Buchan, Shirley Henderson, Kevin McNally, Gregor Fisher and Jack Farthing co-star.

TROY: FALL OF A CITY an epic tale of mortals and gods, has a psychologically rich and sweeping narrative which goes back to the story’s origins: to the judgement of Paris, his scandalous love affair with Helen, and the ill-starred prophecy surrounding his birth. Told from the perspective of the Trojan royal family at the heart of the siege, TROY: FALL OF A CITY is a rich story of love, intrigue, betrayal and belonging. Combining thrilling adventure with heart-breaking intimacy, it conveys the big themes of human existence and identity; of people battling to retain their sense of humanity and compassion amid the devastation and destruction of war.
