Gentleman Jack renewed for 2nd season.

Will there be a second season of ‘Gentleman Jack’?

Here’s some wonderful and unexpectedly early news for Gentleman Jack fans!

Following its hugely successful debut in the UK last month, the BBC has already confirmed that the period drama series has been renewed for a second season.

Set in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1832, Gentleman Jack is based on the diaries of remarkable Regency landowner Anne Lister, played by Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones.

Episode 1 was the most successful launch for a new BBC drama this year, winning its slot with a peak of 5.6 million.

Gentleman Jack will return next year with another eight episodes.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, commented: “Gentleman Jack exudes sass and originality, and has been a huge hit with our BBC One audience. We look forward to continuing Anne Lister’s journey with Sally, Suranne and the rest of the team.”

Executive producer Faith Penhale added: “I’m thrilled that viewers have embraced Anne Lister with the passion and positivity that she deserves. Sally and Suranne’s achievement in bringing this remarkable and inspirational figure back to life has been quite incredible and we can’t wait to create the next chapter in Anne’s story.”

Alongside Suranne Jones, the cast also includes Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as Ann Walker, Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) as Anne Lister’s sister Marian, Timothy West (Last Tango In Halifax) as their father Jeremy Lister, and Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Diary) as Aunt Anne Lister, with Stephanie Cole (Still Open All Hours), Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Amelia Bullmore (Scott & Bailey), Vincent Franklin (Happy Valley), Shaun Dooley (Broadchurch), Joe Armstrong (Happy Valley).

Lambert Wilson will lead the male part of the cast
To be directed by famous Paul Verhoeven, it will see gorgeousVirginie Efiraplaying Benedetta Carlini, a novice nun capable of performing miracles, who joins an Italian convent in the late 17th century, as plague is ravaging the land.  While at the convent she begins a love affair with another woman. Steamy and scandalous and delightfully sinful :) The story is, apparently, based on historical facts about the abbess Carlini.

Gentleman Jack (once called Shibden Hall)

BBC’S ‘GENTLEMAN JACK’
MINI SERIES REVEALS FULL CAST
Something lesbiefriendly today, spylings! BBC has revealed the whole cast for their period set mini series GENTLEMAN JACK (previously known as Shibden Hall) which will celebrate 19th century feminism led by Surrane Jones! Can’t say I’m overly optimistic given the fact the eight episode series has been written by Sally Wainwright who gave us the borderline unwatchable and mind numbingly uninspired To Walk Invisible, but we shall give it the benefit of the doubt. The series will air on HBO in USA.

  GENTLEMAN JACK

Gentleman Jack will be set in 1832 Halifax, West Yorkshire, revolving around landowner Anne Lister (Surrane Jones) and her determination to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, by reopening the coal mines and marrying well. But  charismatic, single minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister – who dressed head to foot in black and charmed her way into high society – has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman. And not just any woman: the woman Anne Lister marries must be seriously wealthy. Every part of Anne’s story was recorded in her diaries that contain the most intimate details of her life, once hidden in a secret code that is now broken. The story examines Anne’s relationships at home with her family, servants, tenants and industrial rivals and, most importantly, would-be wife.
